Hello!

My name is Zach Wendling, a Lincoln-based reporter focused on policy and politics.

For much of my life, writing and reporting have been another way of communicating and connecting with the world around me. I view journalism as a way to join the lives of those around us, to hear perspectives and ultimately act as a steward, transcending those views onto a viewable platform. We can become entrenched in differentiating details, but at the end of the day, we are all human and require connection.

This path has brought me to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a May 2023 graduate with dual degrees in Journalism and Political Science. From Nebraska to Washington, D.C., my work has focused on COVID-19, the University of Nebraska’s administration and Board of Regents, the Nebraska Legislature and more.

I currently serve as the 2023 intern for the Nebraska Examiner, which is under the umbrella of States Newsroom, a group of nonprofit organizations reporting on policy, governance and politics in our respective states.

To all those reading this, I encourage you to get in touch, ask questions and follow my work. I am a constant learner and no matter our differences, I want to learn and be better with every step I can. Thanks for dropping by!

Some of my reporting highlights include:

  • Breaking UNL's decision to shutter campus due to COVID-19 in March 2020 and a one-year follow-up project on the impacts on campus.

  • Connecting the importance of the NE-01 congressional race in 2022 and subsequent Nebraska Legislative races financially and socially on politics.

  • Building connections and relationships with the women serving in the Nebraska Legislature for Women in Public Office Day (and later all senators).

  • Following the candidacy and first year in office of the new University of Nebraska president.

  • Leading election 2022 midterm plans for UNL's College of Journalism and Mass Communications.

COMING SOON: Senior undergraduate honors thesis focused on political relationships in the Nebraska Legislature.
